Cape Henlopen High tried to rally from a 22-point halftime deficit but fell short as the Vikings fell 28-20 to Salesianum on the opening night of the high school football season on Thursday night.
Trailing 28-6 at halftime, Cape got two quick touchdowns after recovering a Sallies fumble in the fourth quarter. The second TD, on a 15-yard run by quarterback Hank D’Ambrogi with 7:57 left got the Vikings with 28-20.
Cape’s defense made a big third-down stop to get another chance. But the Sals pulled in an interception with 3:48 remaining and ran out the clock.
The Sals led 14-0 before opening up a 28-6 advantage by halftime in the matchup of Class 3A programs. It was the first time the Vikings had faced Sallies since 1993.
Cape Henlopen next plays at Woodbridge on Sept. 10.
