Local high school roundup: Seven get top seeds on mat

Seven Henlopen Conference wrestlers have been awarded the top seed in their weight class for this weekend’s DIAA wrestling state tournament.

The opening rounds of the three-day tourney, which is being held at Cape Henlopen High, will be split between Saturday and Sunday due to the coronavirus pandemic. On Saturday, the preliminary rounds for 106 through 145 pounds will be held with 152 to 285 pounds being competed on Sunday.

Competition begins at 11 a.m. both days.

The tournament will conclude on Wednesday with the semifinals at 11 a.m. and the finals slated for about 6 p.m.

The Henlopen’s No. 1 seeds are Smyrna’s Gabe Giampietro (113) and Joseph Natarcola (160), Milford’s Jack Thode (126) and Trenton Grant (132), Cape Henlopen’s Luke Bender (145), Sussex Central’s Josh Negron (182) and Caesar Rodney’s Kevin Hudson (285).

Giampietro, Natarcola and Hudson are all two-time defending state champions while Thode won the title last winter.

The other top seeds are Salesianum’s Chris Gandolfo (106), Caravel’s Luke Poore (120), Ethan Gray (138), Alex Poore (152) and Danny Stradley (195), Sanford’s Justin Griffith (170) and William Penn’s Nasir Dreuitt (220).

With no dual-meet state championships being held this year, the top two teams in both Division I and II will be determined by individual points.

Swimming

State meet at Sussex Academy: The DIAA swimming state championships will be held this weekend at Sussex Academy in Georgetown.

The girls’ meet will be held on Saturday with the boys’ on Sunday. Competition will begin at 10 a.m. both days.

Boys’ basketball

Cape Henlopen 67, Milford 55: The Vikings improved their record to 4-8 with the Henlopen North win.

The two squads play again today at 7 p.m. at Milford in their regular-season finale.

Indian River 73, Laurel 38: The Indians broke the game open with a 23-9 run in the third quarter.

Gage Spinks (19), Ja’siah Rounds (12) and Brendon Bradford (10) all scored in double figures for IR, which hit 10 three-pointers.

Omori’Yon Cannon had 18 points with Nifere Griffin scoring 16 for the Bulldogs.

Red Lion Christian 65, First State Military 41: The Bulldogs closed the regular season with the Diamond State Conference loss.

Girls’ basketball

Laurel 44, Indian River 33: The Bulldogs improved their record to 10-1 with the Henlopen South victory.

Laurel plays a 4:30 p.m. game at Woodbridge today in its regular-season finale. It will be the Bulldogs’ fourth game in as many days and fifth game in the last six days.

Delmarva Christian 65, Caravel 42: The Royals knocked off the Buccaneers (7-5) to improve to 10-4.
