Letter to the Editor: Highmark’s cuts to reimbursement for ARPNs questioned

Posted

I am writing to express my disappointment and concern about Highmark Health Options’ recent decision to cut reimbursement rates for advanced practice registered nurses in Delaware by 15%, as of Jan. 1, 2023. This decision is particularly concerning given the current inflation, mental health crisis and shortage of mental health providers.

APRNs play a vital role in the delivery of health care services in our state. They provide primary care, diagnose and treat illnesses, and manage patients with chronic conditions. They are also trained to manage mental health conditions and provide counseling services.

With this cut in reimbursement, these nurses will be forced to make difficult choices about their practice and may be forced to reduce the number of patients they see or even close their practices altogether. This will have a detrimental effect on access to health care for many Delawareans, particularly those who live in underserved areas.

Furthermore, the mental health crisis has never been more pressing, and the lack of mental health providers is a major concern. This decision by Highmark Health Options will only exacerbate this problem and make it harder for people to access the care they need.

I urge Highmark Health Options to reconsider this decision and to work with advanced practice registered nurses to find a solution that will ensure that they can continue to provide the high-quality care that our communities need.
