Letter to the Editor: Deforestation causes many issues in Delaware

Posted

Deforestation in Delaware has increased dramatically.

As someone who has grown up in Delaware their entire life, I have seen the effects of deforestation around us, and I am sure you have, too. For example, deer in your backyard and more and more animals showing up dead on the roads.

Not only are animals losing their habitats, but we are increasing carbon emissions in our atmosphere. In Delaware alone, our temperatures have risen by more than 2 degrees. A few major ways this will affect our state are by rising floodwaters, extreme heat, changing ecology and frequent droughts. Frequent droughts could threaten Delaware’s agricultural economy, which relies heavily on irrigation. Almost every day, we see more “for sale” signs on large acres of forests, and every day, those forests are getting cut down for more homes to move in.

Take action and help us preserve our Delaware forests by planting a tree or buying an older home.
