League of Women Voters to host Candidates Night in Dover

Posted

DOVER — The League of Women Voters of Kent County will hold a Candidates Night debate from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Palmer Room of the Modern Maturity Center.

Invited candidates include those running for mayor of Dover and City Council seats. This event will allow residents to learn where the hopefuls stand on issues of concern to the city’s citizens.

This forum is being hosted by the league and the center, and is co-sponsored by the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Central Delaware.

Attendees will be given index cards on which to pose questions to the candidates, while league members moderate the debate.

The League of Women Voters is required to abide by regulations of the Federal Elections Commission, the Federal Communications Commission and the Internal Revenue Service regarding nonpartisan groups sponsoring appearances of candidates. Consequently, should only one candidate for a particular office be present, the organization cannot allow him or her to address the audience during the formal debate. This ruling also applies to those running unopposed. Candidates affected by these regulations are encouraged to attend and meet informally with constituents prior to and after the program.
