Ken Burns docuseries could be focusing on Dover

DOVER — A documentary series from noted filmmaker Ken Burns, which aims to highlight small towns and cities across America, may be featuring the capital of the First State.

Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen said Thursday that he spoke with Mr. Burns’ production team this week about filming a segment of the series in the city.

While Dover being part is not yet guaranteed, Mayor Christiansen said the first step in the process is to film footage early next week for Mr. Burns’ staff to review.

If it is determined the city should be featured, a production team would then come to Dover to film.

Mayor Christiansen said he has long touted Dover as “where America started.” He said a documentary series would further highlight the city’s history.

“They were interested in that,” the mayor said of Dover’s past. “They want us to be part of their documentary.”

Mr. Burns is an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker (for “Brooklyn Bridge” and “The Statue of Liberty”) and has won several Emmy Awards.

He is known for his use of archival footage and photographs to highlight American history. Mr. Burns directed “The Vietnam War,” which aired in 2017, and “The Civil War,” which was shown in 1990.

Mr. Burns’ latest production came out in April on PBS. “Hemingway” is a three-episode, six-hour series co-directed by Mr. Burns and Lynn Novick.
