Local College Roundup: Hens take two from Towson in softball

Delaware pounded out 19 runs on 22 hits during a 10-4, 9-3 CAA doubleheader sweep of Towson in softball on Saturday afternoon.

The Hens (15-3) trailed 4-1 in the first game but took a 7-4 lead when Hanna Garber belted a grand slam in the fourth inning. Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest), who had two hits, then singled and Karolina Flores followed with a two-run homer to put the Blue Hens up five.

Starting pitcher Emily Winburn did not allow a hit after the second inning, as she went the distance to improve to 8-0 on the season.

Garber finished with two hits and five RBI to pace Delaware, while Flores also had two hits to go with three RBI.

Delaware quickly scored three runs in the top of the first during the nightcap, as Brittney Mendoza hit a sacrifice fly before Glanden and Flores contributed RBI doubles.

Glanden then belted a three-run homer in the second to make it a 7-1 game.

Garber finished 4-for-4 with two triples, while Glanden and Flores each added two hits.

Baseball

Hens split with Penn: Delaware split with Penn winning the first game, 4-0, before dropping the nightcap, 9-1, on Saturday.

Junior Chris Ludman worked a complete game shutout, striking out eight, allowing just six hits and no walks in the opening win.

Junior Jordan Hutchins (Dover) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double while Kyle Baker went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and Joseph Carpenter added two RBI.

Ludman did not allow a base runner over the last three innings and worked four 1-2-3 innings in the game.

Freshman Aidan Riley had a pair of hits for Delaware in the nightcap.

Lacrosse

MEN, Drexel 12, Delaware 9: The Dragons used a 7-1 run to take control of the CAA contest before knocking off the No. 12 Blue Hens.

With the game tied 4-4, Drexel (3-2 CAA, 5-2) ran off seven of the game’s next eight goals to open up an 11-5 advantage with 5:12 left in the third quarter. The Dragons were up 12-6 before Delaware (4-1 CAA, 7-2 overall) netted the final three goals.

Drexel has won seven of the last 10 meetings in the 73-game series.

Charlie Kitchen and Matt Acchione paced the Hens with three goals apiece. Kitchen tacked on two assists to finish with a team-best five points, while adding four ground balls to his stat line.

Jake Hervada won 8-of-12 faceoffs to move into seventh all-time in program history.

Marywood 16, Wesley 3: Ryan Gilman, Kyle Mackall-Lloyd and Enosh Angelot all scored goals for the Wolverines in the Atlantic East Conference loss.

Dylan Sicca made 18 saves for Wesley (0-4), which was out-scored 10-1 in the second half.

WOMEN, Marywood 15, Wesley 7: The Wolverines got three goals from Catherine Bennett in the AEC setback.

Emily Calderelli, Lindsey Lurz, Madison Sumner and Hanna Giaccone also scored for Wesley with Katelyn Porter (Smyrna) making nine saves.

Women’s soccer

Delaware 1, Drexel 0: The Blue Hens (1-3 CAA, 3-4 overall) snapped a four-game losing streak with the win in their regular-season finale.

After controlling the ball the majority of the first half, junior Gabby Johnson found the left post in the 21st minute to guide the ball past the Dragons’ goalkeeper. It was the second goal of the season for Johnson.

Goalie Lauren Krinsky recorded four saves.
