Good Sports Awards honor Wicomico’s players, coaches

Posted

Players and coaches from 21 youth-based sports organizations were recognized at the fourth-annual Good Sports Awards held last Thursday.

The Good Sports Awards, presented by Robinson’s, honors community members who demonstrate the four youth sports core values supported by Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism: fun, community, sportsmanship and skill development.

Eligible youth-based sports organizations were invited to recognize one youth player and one coach who best demonstrate these core values. Representatives of these organizations could also make nominations for four additional awards.

Those awards were the Administrator of the Year, sponsored by Hebron Savings Bank, which went to Shametress Collins-Lightfoot of Salisbury Elite; Official of the Year, sponsored by Robinson’s, which went to Clayton Hearn of MRC Youth Baseball; the Community Impact Award, sponsored by Mountaire Farms, which went to Brian Lewis of Cunningham Recreation; and the Lorne C. Rickert Lifetime Volunteer Award, sponsored by the Delmarva Shorebirds, which went to Bruce Wharton and Thomas VanLandingham of Kappa Alpha Psi Basketball.

The award ceremony was held in the Wicomico Civic Center’s Normandy Arena and included a buffet dinner and auction.

Zach Parnes, sports director for the Delmarva Sports Network, was the emcee, and the network was on-site filming the event and conducting interviews.

The Youth Sportsmanship and Outstanding Coach Awards were sponsored by Amerigroup and Robinson’s. Congratulations to the winners listed above and the following Youth Sportsmanship Award and Outstanding Coach Award winners:
