Glenn Ward Memorial Softball tournament ends after 32 years

CRISFIELD — The Crisfield Lions Club recently announced that it has officially ended the Glenn Ward Memorial Co-Ed Softball Tournament. It was last held in 2019 and canceled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

According to a club statement, "We graciously thank the numerous donors, volunteers, umpires, teams, sponsors, and Ward family for their support over the past 32 years, raising over $250,000 in the process for those in need of medical assistance."

In November 1986, W. Glenn Ward was the youngest County Commissioner ever elected but he would not complete his term, passing away from cancer in December 1988 at age 29. In the fall of 1989 a group of family and friends held a softball game and later a barbeque at the home of Mike and Paula Todd, and a promise tree raised $800 to be given to Glenn’s widow and stepson, Kay and John David Perdue.

Friends associated with the Lions and Lioness clubs took that opportunity to grow this informal event into a charity tournament which was held annually at the ball park on Old State Road that was renamed in Glenn’s honor.

Faithful in their attendance were members of Glenn’s family, including his mother and father Argene and Bill Ward, who died in January and March of this year after 64 years of marriage.

With their passing and the end of the tournament the newly-named "Crisfield Lions-Ward Family Foundation" was launched to memorialize Glenn, Argene and Bill. In its message to the community the club stated, "we will continue to serve those in need as we have done with the support of the Ward family and our donors for many more years to come!"

A new fundraising event will be announced, and the Lioness-Lions expressed they will continue to partner with the Lions to honor the Ward family legacy.
