WILMINGTON — A 64-year-old California man was indicted on two charges for allegedly mailing threatening communications in Delaware, United States Attorney David C. Weiss announced Friday.

Michael Protack, of Seal Beach, formerly of Delaware, allegedly used the U.S. Postal Service to mail two separate communications containing a threat to injure another person in earlier this year. A federal grand jury returned the indictment on Friday.

According to the release, Mr. Protack faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison if convicted. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties, the release noted.

While in Delaware, Mr. Protack unsuccessfully ran for governor, U.S. Senate and New Castle County Council as a Republican at various times between 2004 and 2014,

This case has been investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the FBI Baltimore Division’s Wilmington Office, with assistance from the Delaware State Police and the New Castle County Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Briana Knox is prosecuting the case.
