Fatal pedestrian accident in Delaware

DELAWARE CITY — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Delaware City area Sunday morning.

Delaware State Police spokesman Senior Corporal Leonard DeMalto said that at approximately 12:31 a.m., a white 2014 Chevrolet Cruze was traveling northbound on South Dupont Highway just north of the intersection at Mid-County Drive. At this time, a 37-year-old female pedestrian from Philadelphia was crossing South Dupont Highway from west to east and entered into the path of the Cruze. As a result, the right front of the Cruze struck the pedestrian in the roadway.

Both the operator, a 24-year-old woman from Wilmington and the passenger, a 24-year-old woman from Middletown were properly restrained. Neither individual requested medical attention at the scene.

Cpl. DeMalto said the female pedestrian was not carrying any lighting device and was not utilizing a crosswalk at the time of the incident. She sustained critical injuries and was transported via ambulance to an area hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased. Identification of the victim was pending notification to the next of kin Sunday

No other injuries were reported. The road was closed for approximately three hours while the collision was investigated and cleared.
