Ex-Wesley basketball coach Burrows back in college coaching

Dean Burrows will be back on the bench this winter.

The former Wesley College men’s basketball coach has been hired as the head coach at Division III Mississippi University for Women.

Burrows spent the last nine seasons coaching with the Wolverines, including the last six years as head coach.

Wesley closed its athletic department at the end of the school year in the spring.

“From the moment we set foot on campus, we felt its first-class presence,” Burrows said in a press release. “That, combined with how hospitable everyone we had the privilege to meet were, more than excites us.”

Despite its name, MUW became a coed school 30 years ago. The Owls went 10-13 in the 2019-20 season. They played only four games last season because of the pandemic.

Burrows helped Wesley make three NCAA Division III tournament appearances, including two as an assistant to Jerry Kobasa. Burrows, who also coached at St. Thomas More, went 66-71 as the Wolverines’ head coach.

His best season at Wesley came in 2019-20 when the Wolverines went 18-10 and won the Atlantic East Conference title.

“Dean Burrows brings to The W everything you would hope for in a head coach,” said MUW athletic director Jennifer Claybrook. “He is the perfect person to lead us into the NCAA Division III era at The W: he is a strong proponent of academics first-and-foremost; he stresses having his team involved in campus and community activities to give back, and; he is a proven winner on the court. We are so blessed to have Dean and his family become a part of The W.”
