Community event encourages positive interaction with first responders

GEORGETOWN — Community unity, family fun and first-responder interaction are the objectives of the Georgetown National Night Out on Tuesday.

The event will be held 6-8 on the grounds of the Richard Allen School, 316 S. Railroad Ave.

It is co-sponsored by the Georgetown Police Department, the First State Community Action Agency, the Richard Allen Coalition, the Springboard Collaborative and Georgetown CommUNITY, a coalition that seeks to “help … find common ground, discover what we all collectively value and illuminate what makes Georgetown Delaware a special place,” according to its website.

Among other activities, Night Out provides a chance for residents to interact with local first responders and learn about what they do on a daily basis.

Georgetown police, the Delaware State Police and the Georgetown Fire Co., as well as Sussex County and Georgetown Emergency Medical Services, are expected to be on hand. The agencies will be showcasing some of their equipment and specialized units.

Last year’s event featured 27 vendors, and organizers anticipate Tuesday’s will likely match that.

“In addition to the usual suspects, it’s a lot of organizations that want to provide information,” said Judson Malone, one of the coordinators.

Barbecued chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks will be available free of charge.

And for children, there will be games, activities, prizes and tote bags with school supplies. They can also participate in a raffle event by checking off their visits to booths on a provided sheet and submitting the sheet into a drawing for bikes.

Organizers marketed Night Out via flyers distributed throughout town, in both Spanish and English.

In addition, they will extend invitations to those in the homeless community, with possible shuttle service.

Georgetown’s event Tuesday joins others throughout the state and country.

“This is a night for our nation to stand together and promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement,” said National Night Out project coordinator Matt Peskin.

“When law enforcement and the community work closely together, some amazing things can happen.”

On Aug. 9, the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Co. will host its free Night Out, 6-8 at the fire station, 12611 Sussex Highway.

At that event, donations will be accepted for a school supply drive supporting the Woodbridge School District, as well as its nonperishable-food collection for the Food Bank of Delaware.
