Drug, firearms charges result from stop in Dover

DOVER — A 24-year-old man was arrested on drug and firearms charges during a traffic stop Tuesday morning, Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman said.

According to authorities, officers stopped Brandon Sammons, of Dover, at approximately 1:50 a.m. for a traffic violation in the area of North DuPont Highway and Division Street. When officers approached the vehicle, they detected a strong odor of marijuana, police said.

According to police, Mr. Sammons was driving with a suspended license. During a search of the vehicle, officers located 700 grams of marijuana, a loaded 9mm handgun, and a fixed blade knife in the center console, police said.

Mr. Sammons was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by person prohibited, carrying a concealed deadly weapon (two counts), possession with intent to deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and traffic violations.

He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $31,300 secured bond.
