Downtown Dover Partnership offering free retail location for three months

DOVER — Following the success of its last-minute holiday pop-up shop program, the Downtown Dover Partnership is extending the initiative to allow one lucky small business to set up a brick-and-mortar store, but this time the chosen business will get to enjoy three months of free retail space.

The DDP is seeking applications from businesses that want to set up shop in the micro-retail spot at 136 W. Loockerman St.

The first-floor space is move-in-ready, handicap-accessible and has large display windows.

The DDP will offer three months of free rent with the possibility of signing a month-to-month lease to the chosen business.

“Qualified applicants are successful, established business owners who are considering expanding into brick-and-mortar locations,” DDP Executive Director Diane Laird said.

Interested business owners must complete an online application, in which they will be required to provide a 75-word summary of the business, a description of the products to be sold and information to show the success of their business to date. They must also commit to being open for business at least four days a week for a minimum of six hours a day.

The chosen business will be required to sign a short-term lease, as well as cover the costs of utilities and provide a refundable security deposit and proof of rental liability insurance.

“The ideal retailer will be ready to merchandise this 400-square-foot space and sell retail items including food/beverage items (pre-packaged only) that require no on-site preparation. So, this could be an already successful business seeking a second location or an early-stage company currently generating steady revenue and operating with a strong customer base,” Ms. Laird said.

In December, the DDP offered the same space to retailers that wanted to reach out to holiday shoppers.

The group received 15 applications. Milford’s Fur Baby Boutique was chosen for the last-minute shop opportunity.
