Dover High student arrested after gun found

DOVER — A 16-year-old male Dover High student was arrested Tuesday after being found with a gun on campus, authorities said.

The sequence began around 12:20 p.m. when “information was received at the school and communicated to the School Resource Officer (SRO) that the male student may be in possession of a firearm,” Dover police spokesman Sgt. Hoffman said in a news release.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown, police said. The student was taken into custody without incident at approximately 12:29 p.m. and police said the lockdown was lifted.

Police said the SRO located a firearm when searching the student. According to police, officers “found no evidence to suggest that the suspect intended or made threats to use the firearm.”

The youth was transported to the Dover Police Department where he was to be charged with possession of a firearm by person prohibited (juvenile), carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and possession of a weapon in a school safe zone.

Citing departmental policy, Dover police did not release the student’s identity.

Afterward, the Capital School District released a statement that included incident details. According to the district, the student “ ... will also be subject to further discipline through board action.

According to Supt. Dr. Villicia Cade, ”The Capital School District will continue to work collaboratively with the Dover Police Department and our community to be vigilant regarding the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff. We are grateful for the willingness of community members to share critical information, as well as the effective implementation of our safety protocols.
