Dorchester seniors get first peek at new center

Posted

CAMBRIDGE – On March 15, Dorchester seniors got a first look at their new center in Cambridge, the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Intergenerational Center, also called Chesapeake Grove.

The Dorchester Senior Program closed for the COVID pandemic and reopened this month for vaccinated seniors. After a week of programming in the original building, participants were told to wear their walking shoes and prepare to go on a “surprise field trip” said Mary Handley, program coordinator. After boarding buses, they made a short trip next door to their new building.

Dr. Santo Grande, CEO of DCS, and other staff met the group at the door as 102-year-old Beula Jackson led the way into the new building.

“I can’t believe this is for us” and “how beautiful” were just some of the remarks made as the group made its way through the community spaces, the senior activity room, the lofty atrium and the dining room with a fireplace.

Dr. Grande told the group about future programs soon to be available including a coffee bar, child care center, exercise rooms and jobs.

Several seniors asked if they could take computer classes in the computer lab and some asked if they could work answering phones.

“The Intergenerational Center is a place for not only seniors to thrive, but also for the entire community to enjoy,” Dr. Grande said. He explained the building will be operational in April once kitchen equipment is installed.

The senior program is operating Tuesdays and Thursdays at this time. Individuals interested in attending may call 410-221-1930. Transportation and lunch are available.

For tours of the building and inquiries about use of meeting spaces, call Mary Handley at 410-221-1900 ext. 138.
