Despite pandemic, Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity still going strong

Organization still needs your help

Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity (CDHFH) has built 75 affordable homes in Kent County since 1990, but that is not nearly enough. The holiday season can be disheartening for those who do not have a safe place to live. Can you imagine not being able to gather with your family for the holidays? One in seven households in Delaware spend more than half of their income on housing expenses, making the decision to pay for holiday expenditures or living expenses difficult.

All of CDHFH’s homeowners share a common hope - to build a new life with stability, strength and self-reliance. After all, every ONE deserves a decent place to call home.

Although CDHFH is still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, we were still able to approve two new partner families in 2021. The Tolson family is one of those newly approved partner families beginning their journey towards homeownership.

As a single mother of three children, Danielle struggled to find an affordable place to call home. Following the split from her children’s father, she was forced to settle on a small two-bedroom house in which they are currently residing. It was evident that two bedrooms were not enough to accommodate a family of this size but without a choice, Danelle continued to press forward in search of a solution.

Following a friend’s advice, Danielle began exploring affordable housing programs available through NCALL, Milford Housing Authority, and Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity. When the pandemic hit, Danielle, like many others, was forced out of work leaving her and her family more vulnerable than ever. In December 2020, Danielle submitted her application to CDHFH and in March 2021, she was life-changing news– she was approved!

CDHFH cannot continue serving our community alone, especially with construction costs at an all-time high. Making a one-time or monthly gift to Central Delaware Habitat will allow us to continue building affordable homes for families like the Tolson’s so they can gather for the holidays and celebrate all of life’s milestones. If you would like to help build the story of home, please donate online or join our monthly Carpenters Club giving program. Please visit centraldelawarehabitat.org/donate for details.

No gift is too big or too small. Every dollar matters and will allow hardworking families, like the Tolson’s, to continue to build strength and self-reliance through affordable homewonership.
