Special Olympics Delaware announces Delaware State Police Major Pete Sawyer, Retired Captain Danny Hall, and Captain Kris Thompson have been chosen to join the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg for the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy.
As part of the Final Leg team, Mr. Thompson and Mr. Sawyer will carry the Flame of Hope through various cities in Italy from March 1-8, acting as a Guardian of the Flame while Mr. Hall will act as a member of the logistics team.
Only eight Special Olympics athletes and eighty-one law enforcement officers from around the world were selected representing their local Torch Run and Special Olympics Programs.
This event marks a long-standing tradition where law enforcement officers from around the globe participate in the Final Leg, leading up to the Special Olympics World Summer and Winter Games.
The Flame of Hope will commence its journey on Feb. 25 with a ceremonial lighting at Zappeion Hall in Athens, Greece, using the sun's rays. The flame will then travel to Rome for a blessing by the Pope before heading to Turin.
Starting March 1, the Final Leg, comprising 89 law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes and a logistics team of 17, will escort the Flame of Hope through the Piedmont Region of Italy, culminating in its delivery to the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025 on March 8.
"Being selected as a Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) final leg runner for the Special Olympics is a huge honor and comes with a deep sense of pride and responsibility," said Captain Kristopher Thompson, Commander of Delaware State Police Troop 9.
"The Torch Run is a symbol of support and unity between law enforcement officers and the Special Olympics community and represents much more than just carrying a torch — it's about championing inclusion, spreading awareness, promoting teamwork, and unity. Having the opportunity to represent Delaware law enforcement during this special occasion is especially significant because it’s about carrying the torch in honor of the state’s commitment to supporting its community, both in law enforcement and through Special Olympics."
