Delaware supporters rally for Green Amendment

DOVER — Delawareans gathered for a rally at Legislative Hall Tuesday to support legislation that would add the Green Amendment to the Delaware Constitution.

House Bill 220, sponsored by Rep. Madinah Wilson-Anton, D-Newark, would add environmental rights to the state constitution, protecting the rights to safe water, clean air, a stable climate, and a healthy environment. The bill also aims to protect these rights for future generations and has since garnered support from five Senate sponsors and 10 House sponsors.

Advocates and residents gathered at the rally to discuss the need for the Green Amendment’s inclusion in the state’s constitution and to urge legislators to pass the bill. Those who spoke at the rally emphasized the state’s need to ensure Delawareans that we have clean air, water, soil, and a healthy environment.

“We know Delawareans across our state can’t drink the water that flows from their faucets without getting ill; Delawareans who can’t even take a shower with the water in their homes. And there are Delawareans who can’t plant fruits and vegetables in the ground because the soil is too toxic. This has gone on too long. It’s time we stand up for the rights of Delawareans and enshrine the right to clean air, clean water, and a clean environment in our state’s constitution.” Rep. Wilson-Anton said.

Organizations such as the MidAtlantic Justice Coalition, Opportunity Knocks Delaware, the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, Delaware Working Families Party, Green Amendments for the Generations, Sussex Health & Environmental Network, Methodist Action Program, and the Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware have been working in partnership with residents who have advocated for the inclusion of the Green Amendment in state law.
