DOVER — Dr. Esosa Iriowen, a Delaware State University adjunct associate professor of chemistry, recently received two humanitarian awards: a Melvin Jones Fellowship and a Ted Reiver Fellowship.

Dr. Iriowen, who is also a university alumnus, received the award during the Feb. 21 Dover Lions Club service award dinner, which also marked the organization’s 75th year.

The Jones award, named in honor of the founder of Lions Clubs International, is considered the highest award presented by the group. Nominations are based on documented service to community.

The Ted Reiver honor, named after the former director of the International Association of Lions Clubs, was given in recognition of Dr. Iriowen’s leadership in providing eyesight screening for preschoolers in Kent County.

The professor serves as the president of the Dover Lions Club and is active in other endeavors. He is a faculty adviser for the DSU Interact Club of the Early College High School, the university’s Rotaract Club and the campus Lions Club, as well as the Deeper Life Bible Church student chapter.

He is a board member for the Academy of Dover and is actively affiliated with a number of research and chemistry organizations.

Dr. Iriowen completed a master’s degree in chemistry in 2010 and a 2015 Ph.D. in applied chemistry at DSU.
