Delaware receives $4.8M grant through Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

The U.S. Department of Education announced nearly $1 billion in awards through the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act on Thursday, including more than $4.8 million for the First State.

The awards, known as Stronger Connections Grants, will help schools provide students the safe and supportive opportunities and environments critical for their success.

The state of Delaware was granted $4,833,025 for its continued effort to provide healthy learning.

“We have years of evidence that demonstrate the value of building safe and supportive schools. These efforts improve academic achievement, promote emotional well-being, reduce disciplinary actions and increase positive behaviors,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.

“Safe and supportive schools help our children and youth overcome trauma and provide a strong foundation of emotional and physical safety. These grants will provide real benefits to real students in real schools.”

The funds can be used to support school and community partnerships that pursue multifaceted solutions to prevent and respond more effectively to acts of bullying, violence and hate that impact members of their neighborhoods. Decades of research have shown safe schools to be most effective in supporting academic success, as well as meeting the social, emotional, physical and mental health needs of pupils.

As part of the department’s announcement, Mr. Cardona sent chief state school officers letters outlining three principles they are encouraged to consider when designing a grant competition and providing agencies with direction for how they use these funds:

  • Implement evidence-based strategies that meet student social, emotional and mental well-being needs; create positive, inclusive and supportive environments; and increase access to place-based interventions and services.
  • Engage students, families, educators, staff and community organizations in the selection and implementation of strategies to create safe environments.
  • Design and implement policies and practices that are responsive to underserved students, protect their rights and demonstrate respect for their dignity and potential.
