Delaware Division of Public Health to close four COVID vaccination sites

DOVER — The Delaware Division of Public Health will close its four standing COVID-19 vaccination sites Thursday, the agency announced Friday.

The decision was made due to declining vaccination numbers at the facilities, DPH said.

The locations — at the Blue Hen Corporate Center in Dover, Georgetown Plaza, University Plaza in Newark and Canby Park in Wilmington — were opened in 2021 to accommodate the large demand for vaccines at the time.

Vaccinations will now shift to DPH clinics.

In addition, COVID-19 testing at the same four sites, run by Curative, is in the process of moving to other locations, as testing demand has also waned in March. DPH announced earlier this week that its weekly testing at Caesar Rodney High School would cease indefinitely.

Delawareans with Curative testing appointments should confirm where it will take place prior to going, DPH said.

A list of testing sites is available here, while vaccination locations are listed here.

Delaware’s highest amount of vaccine doses in a single day over the last 30 days was 1,256 on Feb. 25. The state was administering more than 5,000 doses a day in December 2021.

The state is also down to averaging 2,379.1 tests per day over the last week. That number was as high as 9,820.1 tests per day Jan. 11.

Delaware’s seven-day rolling average for percentage of positive tests is 3.2%, which is below the World Health Organization’s recommended mark of 5%. Percentage data is as of Tuesday at 6 p.m. due to a two-day lag to account for the time delay between the date of the test and the date that DPH receives the result.

COVID-19 hospitalizations are at 35 as of Thursday at 6 p.m.

One new COVID-19-related death was announced to bring the total to 2,837. The most recent death was a 73-year-old Kent County resident, according to DPH.

Delaware has recorded 259,185 positive cases of the virus which includes 77 new cases in DPH’s report on Friday. The state is averaging 63 positive cases per day over the last week.
