Delaware Memorial Bridge sets record traffic volume

Posted

WILMINGTON — The Delaware Memorial Bridge handled more than 1.5 million vehicles in September, according to the Delaware River and Bay Authority.

Continued strength in commercial traffic and passenger car volumes offset weakness in daily commuter numbers for the month, but daily commuter traffic remains weak compared to 2019 numbers.

Delaware Memorial Bridge Twin Spans registered a milestone year for traffic volume in 2019, handling 18,288,314 vehicles through the southbound toll plaza, but traffic numbers remain off nearly 15% compared to 2019 figures, although traffic has consistently increased over the last four months. This is consistent with predictions that telecommuting for work continues to be prevalent and pent-up demand for vacations and travel persists as the country recovers from the pandemic.

Multiple construction projects continue at the Delaware Memorial Bridge that will require lane closures, including steelwork repair, suspender rope replacement as well as bridge painting projects during the next several months. DRBA engineers have designed these capital projects to minimize traffic delays to the extent possible, but some are expected, particularly during peak travel times.
