Delaware claims 367 ‘breakthrough’ cases of COVID

DOVER — The Delaware Division of Public Health said there have been a total of 367 breakthrough cases of COVID-19 in Delaware among those fully vaccinated.

A breakthrough case is defined as testing positive for COVID-19 after an individual has been fully vaccinated for two weeks or more — although it does not mean that the infection actually occurred after vaccination, per the DPH.

Three breakthrough cases were identified during the past week. The total of 367 represents less than 0.1% of the 408,721 Delawareans who have been fully vaccinated.

Eighteen of the reported breakthrough cases involved hospitalizations, according to the DPH. Four of the cases resulted in death.

The DPH also identified 48 confirmed cases of COVID-19 variants in Delaware, out of 136 specimens sequenced in the DPH lab this week.

It has sequenced 3,052 specimens for COVID-19 variant strains to date, finding aggregate cases in 1,031 adults ranging in age from 18 to 98 years old, as well as 228 individuals under the age of 18. A total of 955 individuals were from New Castle County, 171 were from Kent County and 133 were from Sussex County.

The most prevalent variant is what is now known as the Alpha variant, which is the UK variant, which was formally called B.1.1.7. There have been 885 cases of the Alpha variant, including 35 identified this week.

The DPH also reported two cases this week of the new Delta variant, first discovered in India, increasing the total number to nine.

No new deaths were announced by the DPH on Friday as the total remained at 1,679. There were 39 new positive cases of the virus reported, bringing the overall number to 109,296.

Additionally, there have been a total of 2,741 positive COVID-19 cases among Delaware’s long-term care centers residents, and 758 residents have died from complications related to COVID-19.

COVID-19 hospitalizations increased by 15, compared to the day prior, up to 51. Of those hospitalized, 13 cases are considered critical.
