Delaware Blue Hens fall to Hawks in field hockey

Monmouth erupted for three goals in the first three minutes of the game before holding off No. 17 Delaware 3-2 in field hockey on Sunday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

Sophomore Julia Duffhuis scored twice in the loss for the Blue Hens (2-2), including one in the first quarter. Ashlyn Carr (Delmar) assisted on both Delaware goals.

The Hens had chances to tie the game with three corner opportunities in the last two minutes, but were unable to execute.

Monmouth (3-1) had a 9-6 advantage in corners.

College volleyball

Hens’ Mason honored: Delaware junior outside hitter Lani Mason was named the CAA Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Mason led the Blue Hens to three consecutive straight-set victories en route to being named the Delaware Invitational MVP. She averaged 3.89 kills per set and hit .311 while leading Delaware in kills in each of the three matches.

She additionally compiled nine service aces (1.00 per set).

Delaware 3, UMES 0: The Blue Hens picked up a 25-18, 25-10, 25-16 win over the Hawks to close out the Delaware Invitational on Saturday night.

The Blue Hens (5-1) concluded the two-day invitational without dropping a set in three matches.

Delaware’s Lani Mason (MVP), Kirah Johnson and Lauryn Richardson were named to the all-tournament team. The Hens head to the three-day Kansas Invitational, which starts on Thursday.

College soccer

UD freshman wins award: Delaware freshman midfielder Orri Thorhallsson was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week on Monday.

Thorhallsson scored Delaware’s first goal in last Monday’s 4-2 loss at 10th-ranked Seton Hall. In the 51st minute he took a short pass from Hyunjun Sun and blasted a shot from 20 yards out into the bottom left corner of the net.

Delaware hires new assistant: Delaware men’s soccer head coach Ian Hennessy has announced that Evan Prybutok has joined his staff as assistant coach.

Prybutok arrives in Newark after spending the previous three seasons at La Salle. During his tenure the Explorers totaled nine year-end accolades from the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Soccer Six.

UD’s most recent assistant coach Chibsah Faisal was hired as Head of Academy Recruitment for Charlotte FC which will begin play in the MLS during the 2022 season.

College golf

Hen women place second: Oihana Etxezarreta tied for second place among individuals while Delaware placed second in the team standings this weekend at the Nittany Lion Invitational.

After posting rounds of 282 and 294 on Saturday, the Blue Hens carded a 287 on Sunday to finish in second place out of 14 teams. Delaware’s 863 score is the lowest three-round total in program history, breaking the previous record of 870 at the 2019 Edisto Island Invitational.

Etxezarreta carded a three under par 69 during Sunday’s final round on the par 72, 6,115-yard PSU White Course, tying for second place with a seven under par 65-75-69-209. Etxezarreta, who recorded four birdies and an eagle on the sixth hole, tied for the second lowest three-round score in UD history.
