WILMINGTON — Delaware’s Department of Public Health added 231 new cases of COVID-19 to its rolls Wednesday.

At least 89 of those cases came from the University of Delaware, according to the COVID-19 tracker. That’s up from the 81 cases reported on Tuesday and seven on Monday.

DPH also announced 14 new deaths due to the virus statewide, although only one happened between Monday and Tuesday. All had underlying conditions while two were residents of long-term care facilities. One of the deceased was 39 years old.

DPH reported that the number of hospitalizations decreased from 182 to 135 in the week between Feb. 23 and Tuesday. Seventeen of those patients are in critical condition.

On Tuesday, 20 people were admitted to the hospital with the virus.

On Wednesday, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Delaware extended the judicial emergency, which has allowed the courts to stay in phase II of Gov. John Carney’s reopening plan.

According to a copy of the order, this means the courts will continue to use audiovisual communication devices wherever possible with the exception of jury trials. The suspension of the time requirements outlines under the speedy trial guidelines will also continue.

The state is continuing to vaccinate residents. So far, 236,155 people have been vaccinated, which is up 2,708 doses from Tuesday.

In total, it has 75,020 doses available, which includes the 8,000 Johnson & Johnson vaccines that will be administered Saturday at Seaford High School and Sunday at the Delaware City Division of Motor Vehicles facility. Those clinics will be invitation only and require an appointment.

Testing continues to be an important part of Delaware’s response to the virus. So far, the state has administered 1,409,916 tests to 628,389 people. Statewide, 540,964 have tested negative for the virus.

Adults aged 18 to 34 continue to test positive for the virus at the highest rate. For every 10,000 Delawareans in that age group, 1,240 have contracted the virus.
