CRISFIELD — As one of its last acts before the new administration took over following the recent election  the City Council amended its food truck ordinance so it will include portable, non-self-propelled vehicles.

Doing this benefits businesses like Pay’s SnoShack which is a trailer selling snow cones and soft ice cream from a lot on West Main Street. Under the former code should it be moved off the lot the owners would have to reapply for permit after a 60-day waiting period.

However, if it was self-propelled it could come and go without this limitation. As a result on June 22 before the newly-elected members were sworn-in the council unanimously voted to amend the zoning code definition to add “portable, non-self propelled self contained” food trailers.

The owners of Pay’s SnoShack had approached the Mayor and Council in May about the limitations they faced, and how the code prevented them from taking the trailer to Westover for something as short as a four-hour event because it meant losing the ability to set-up again in Crisfield without the waiting period.
