Crisfield High student's 'Go Purple' entry wins tri-county logo contest

CRISFIELD — Harmony Carter, a ninth grader at Crisfield High School, earned the honor of being the first winner of the Tri-County Go Purple Kick-Off Student Logo Design Contest. Harmony’s entry will be featured on promotional materials for the kick-off, which will be held on Aug. 27 at Shorebirds Stadium.

Coordinators from Wicomico and Worcester counties visited the school May 27 to make the announcement official. Harmony received Go Purple T-shirts, an Amazon gift card and four tickets to the Shorebirds game, where she has been asked to throw out the first pitch (she has asked that her younger brother be given that honor).

Harmony is the granddaughter of Gayle and David Dorman of Crisfield. When asked how she felt when informed of the win, Harmony said, “it was exciting. I was glad to be one of the first winners of this competition.”

Art teacher David Simpson knows only too well the extent of Harmony’s talent. He was her art teacher when she attended Somerset Intermediate School, where she was permitted to take art seven out of eight quarters of her 6th and 7th grade years. Mr. Simpson transferred to Crisfield High in 2021 and continued to guide Harmony’s art progress.

“It’s a huge honor to have your artwork publicized, but furthermore, it’s an even bigger honor to contribute to an important cause, such as the addiction epidemic,” said Mr. Simpson. “It goes beyond the talent, she’s a good overall student which has attributed to her artistic growth.”

September is Addiction Awareness Month and three years ago each county organized their own kick-off. This year marks the second year the  three counties of Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester will have a unified Go Purple kick-off event.

On hand to make the presentation along with Mr. Simpson were David Fitzgerald of Wicomico Emergency Services; Debbie Smullen of Worcester Goes Purple; and Crissy Bowie-Simpson, Wicomico County Opioid coordinator.
