Local Roundup: Caesar Rodney edges Smyrna 2-1 in girls’ soccer

Elle Davis’ goal in the 37th minute ended up giving Caesar Rodney High a 2-1 win over Smyrna in their Henlopen North girls’ soccer showdown on Thursday evening.

The win in their regular-season finale gives the Riders (7-0 North, 12-3 overall) the North title and a berth in the Henlopen Conference championship game.

Davis scored both CR goals, including the game’s first one in the 10th minute Olivia Hudson assisted on the game-winner for the Riders, who finished with advantages of 16-14 in shots and 5-4 in corner kicks.

Jade Balon tied the game at 1-1 for Smyrna with a goal in the 22nd minute. Halle Geiger made 12 saves.

Delmar 2, Sussex Academy 0: Baylie Phillips tallied a goal in each half as the Wildcats (8-5) won their third game in a row.

Delmar goalie Lily Baker made 15 saves as the Seahawks held advantages of 16-8 in shots and 10-7 in corner kicks.

Archmere 5, Indian River 2: The Auks tallied four straight goals in one stretch to break away from a 1-1 tie.

Brynn McCabe and Sophia Scurci scored the Indians’ goals with Alexandria Davidson making seven saves.

Sussex Tech 5, Sussex Central 2: Lilly Short netted three goals in the Ravens’ North victory.

Meadow Tesoro scored Sussex Tech’s other two goals with Ebony Wilson making 12 saves.

Bayleigh Perdue and Kimberly Moreno-Maldonado scored for the Golden Knights while Kathy Sanchez Garcia made 15 saves.

Cape Henlopen 0, Polytech 0: The Vikings’ Brianna Burrell and the Panthers’ Da Lonna Thomas both made six saves in the Henlopen North tie.

Milford 3, Dover 0: Kyla Laz, Carlie Fogel and Emily Thode all scored in a 24-minute span of the second half to lift the Buccaneers to the North victory.

Baseball

Cape Henlopen 9, Salesianum 8: The Vikings scored five runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to overcome an early 5-0 deficit and win their 14th game in a row.

Brenn Scott (3-for-4, 2 doubles,2 RBI), Timmy Hitchcock (3 hits), Brain Fleming (3 hits) and Justin Marsh (2 hits, 2 RBI) led the way for Cape (15-2). The win was the Vikings’ sixth one-run victory this season.

Dover 3, St. Georges 0: Sir Bauer (2-for-3) stole home before Kole Turner added a two-run single as the Senators scored all three of their runs in the top of the seventh.

Hunter Chambers and Cole Greene combined to pitch a four-hitter and earn the shutout.

Newark 4, Sussex Tech 3: The Ravens couldn’t complete the comeback after the Yellowjackets scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Sussex Tech out-hit Newark, 9-6.
