CPD adds electric vehicle to fleet

CAMBRIDGE – The Cambridge Police Department has put into service their newest vehicle, a 2021 Tesla Model Y. The CPD Tesla is the first of its kind on the Eastern Shore.

The Tesla is part of the City of Cambridge's dedication to adoption of new technologies, a statement from Town Hall said. It will reduce maintenance and fuel costs significantly, while providing experience with next-generation technology for officers as all-electric technology becomes more prevalent and increases in range and battery life for electric vehicles continue to improve.

The unit will be assigned to CPD's community policing unit, allowing for long-term testing of reliability and possibilities as this technology continues in its growth and adoption.

“The City of Cambridge remains dedicated to expanding service capacity as new technologies evolve and increase in reliability and capability,” the statement said.

The Model Y is in the compact luxury crossover SUV class. It has a rear-motor, real-wheel drive layout.

The car is powered by a 75kWh lithium ion battery, and has an electric range of 303 miles. Production of the vehicles started in January of 2020.
