Charges filed against students accused of threatening notes

Posted

The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office has charged two juveniles in the past week with threats of mass violence at the high schools they attend.

On Jan. 25, a 16-year-old female was implicated in an incident in which a threatening note was found at James M. Bennett High School;  on Jan. 20, a 15-year-old male faced similar charges surrounding a note found in Parkside High School.

Deputies said that last Wednesday, just prior to school dismissal at Bennett, they were told that a note containing a threatening message had been found.

School Resource Deputies worked with schools to identify a suspect, who was identified as a JMB student.

The student in the Bennett case was charged with threats of mass violence, disturbing school operations and disorderly conduct.

In the Parkside case on Jan. 20, deputies were told a note with a threatening message had been located that morning inside the school. Officials said the threat that occurred to the school created a large area of concern for students and staff members, triggering a safety response that disrupted a majority of the school day.

Through an extensive collaborative investigation, a suspect was identified as being a student of Parkside High School.

The student in the Parkside case was charged with threats of mass violence, disturbing school operations and disorderly conduct.

Because of their ages, each student received a juvenile referral and was released to the custody of a guardian, pending disposition by Juvenile Services. In just the last several days, deputies said they have been called to investigate four threatening notes found in Wicomico County schools.

Anyone with information about any of these cases should contact School Resource Sgt. Jeff Melvin at 410-548-4892, Ext. 261, or contact any School Resource Deputy.
