Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity needs your help to bring families home for the holiday

Posted

What does “home” mean to you? Is it a warm place to relax after a hard day? A family gathering spot for the holidays? Somewhere to watch your children run and play? For many in the Kent County, Delaware community, the holiday season can be disheartening without an affordable place to call home. In Delaware, one in seven households spend more than half of their income on housing, making the choice between paying for a holiday celebration or living expenses extremely difficult.

Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity believes everyone deserves a decent place to live – especially during the holidays and our future homeowners need your help to build a place to call home. Here is a story from one of our homeowner families, the Jenkins’.

Paula Jenkins moved to Delaware from Maryland at the age of 15. She has been working in healthcare for 27 years, more recently working for Delaware Hospice as a CNA. She has rented all her life. Paula and her three sons, Aarron, Annor, and Sean Jr., have been living in a small apartment in Milford for almost six years. Starting to feel cramped, Paula applied for Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program after seeing other’s homeowner success stories. They were finally approved in 2021. Their home is scheduled to be finished in the Spring of 2023. Despite many delays, the Jenkins family feels blessed to own their very first home. “Owning a home is everything to us. It gives us a sense of freedom, new ventures and creating your own rules,” Paula says.

We encourage you to help our future homeowners build strength and stability by donating to CDHFH this holiday season. We cannot continue serving our community alone, especially with construction costs continuing to rise. Making a one-time or monthly gift to Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity will allow us to continue building affordable homes for families, like the Jenkins’, so they can gather for the holidays and celebrate all of life’s milestones. If you would like to help build the story of home, please donate online or join our monthly Carpenters Club giving program. Please visit centraldelawarehabitat.org/donate for details.
