Cambridge begins temporary juvenile curfew

Posted

CAMBRIDGE – The City of Cambridge’s Temporary Juvenile Curfew went into effect Wednesday, Feb. 1, and will expire June 30.

The move applies to juveniles younger than 16, Sunday-Thursday, 10 p.m.-5 a.m., and Friday-Saturday, 11 p.m.-5 a.m.

A statement from the city said police officers will at first focus on educating: At first contact, officers will issue a juvenile under 16 a written warning and explain the curfew. A letter from the chief of police will be sent to the parent/guardian.

At second contact, the police officer will make notification to the parents and the juvenile may be transported to the Public Safety Building for the parent to take custody of the juvenile. Civil fines will then begin.

Exceptions are:

  • When a juvenile is accompanied by a parent
  • When a juvenile is on an errand as directed by the parent until 12:30 a.m.
  • When a juvenile is exercising First Amendment rights such as free exercise of religion, freedom of speech and right of assembly

The city recommends that parents read Ordinance No. 1207 Juvenile Curfew at

CORRECTION: In the Jan. 25 edition of the Banner, the sole vote in opposition of the curfew was incorrect. The vote was cast by Jameson Harrington (Ward 3). Votes in favor were Brian Roche (Ward 1), Lajan Cephas (Ward 2), Sputty Cephas (Ward 4) and Chad Malkus (Ward 5). The Banner regrets the error.
