VIOLA — A former Caesar Rodney High soccer player died in a single-car crash early Sunday, authorities said.

Delaware State Police said Kayleanna N. Riddle, 17, of Camden-Wyoming, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, who police said was a 17-year-old Magnolia female, was transported via ambulance to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and admitted.

According to spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper, the teens were riding in a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro that was traveling at a high rate of speed when it exited the east edge of South Main Street at approximately 5:57 a.m. The vehicle then struck a residential front porch before continuing into another residence’s front yard, where it came to an uncontrolled stop, DSP said.

The Camaro’s fuel line had ruptured when striking the front porch, and the vehicle caught fire, Cpl. Pepper said. The driver was taken out of the vehicle by a citizen and moved to a safe spot, DSP said.

The Camaro was fully engulfed in flames as the citizen returned to the vehicle to look for any other possible occupants, Cpl. Pepper said. Kayleanna was found deceased in the front passenger’s seat once the flames were extinguished, DSP said.

There was no fire damage to the homes, and Cpl. Pepper said no residents were injured. South Main Street was closed for approximately 3.5 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared. The vehicle was approaching East Evans Road when the crash occurred, DSP said.

On its Facebook page on Monday morning, the Caesar Rodney School District posted that it was “deeply saddened by the tragic accident that took place Sunday morning. We all mourn with the family of Kayleanna Riddle ...”

The district also said it was praying for the recovery of the other teen involved and that counselors are available for students and staff throughout the district.

A post on the Caesar Rodney girls’ soccer Facebook page read “The Caesar Rodney community suffered the loss of one of our students yesterday, Kayleanna Riddle. Kayleanna was a member of the JV squad in 2019 and 2020. Our hearts go out to her family and our school community.”

Through a district spokesman, Superintendent Kevin Fitzgerald and CR High principal Sherry Kijowski declined further comment beyond what was posted on the Facebook page.

The crash remained under investigation by the Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit Monday. DSP asks anyone with information to call Cpl/3 W. Booth at 698-8451. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or online.
