Books in the Belfry: Dorchester library happenings in May

Posted

Join the Dorchester County Public Library in celebrating Children’s Book Week from May 1-7. Celebrated since 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest running, national literacy initiative in the country. This year’s theme is “Read Books, Spark Change” and acknowledges the power that books and stories have to make a difference in the life of a child, a classroom or a community. Stop by the Cambridge or Hurlock branch and check out the "Read Books, Spark Change" children's book displays and pick up a free children’s activity packet.

In honor of Mother’s Day, the Dorchester Discussions book club pick for May is “Founding Mothers” by Cokie Roberts. In this New York Times bestseller, Roberts offers “an intimate and illuminating look at the fervently patriotic and passionate women whose tireless pursuits on behalf of their families and their country proved just as crucial to the forging of a new nation as the rebellion that established it.” Copies of “Founding Mothers” are available from the library. Dorchester Discussions will meet Tuesday, May 22, at 6 p.m. in the Cambridge Meeting Room. We would love to see you there!

May events at the Cambridge branch include children’s story time, Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.; Home School Book Club, Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.; Teen Anime and Comic Club, Wednesdays at 4 p.m.

May events at the Hurlock branch include children’s story time, Mondays at 10:30 a.m. From May 1-5, join a Scavenger Hunt with Barrie the Bookworm. Hunt through the stacks to find where Barry the Bookworm is hiding while getting to know your local library. Stop in May 8-12 and create a DIY Mother’s Day card for someone special in your life.

Stop by either branch between May 15 and 19 to make a bookmark and enter your design in the Summer Reading Bookmark Contest. One winner from each branch will be selected to have their design printed and available all summer!

Also available at both branches is May’s take-home craft, a DIY no-bake playdough, available while supplies last.
