Blue Hens picked No. 2 in CAA football poll

NEWARK — Delaware’s football players would love to pick up where they left off in the spring.

And, until they prove otherwise, that’s what people are expecting from the Blue Hens.

After going 7-1 and reaching the NCAA FCS Division I playoffs in the unprecedented spring season, Delaware was picked to finish second this fall in the Colonial Athletic Association pre-season poll that was announced this morning.

Only pre-season favorite James Madison was chosen to finish ahead of the Blue Hens.

Delaware and JMU didn’t play each other in the spring. The Dukes were ranked ahead of the Hens in the national polls all spring but the Hens received the league’s automatic playoff bid after being able to play one more CAA contest.

The Dukes have both the league’s pre-season offensive and defensive players of the year in running back Percy Agyei-Obese and defensive lineman Mike Greene.

The Hens put eight players on the pre-season all-CAA team, led by junior quarterback Nolan Henderson, the Smyrna High grad. Other Delaware players honored on offense are running back Dejoun Lee, receiver Thyrick Pitts and lineman David Kroll.

Making pre-season from Delaware’s defense were lineman Chase McGowan and linebacker Johnny Buchanan along with defensive backs Kedrick Whitehead and Nijuel Hill.

The Hens open the season on Sept. 2 at Maine.
