Posted

Sussex Central High baseball player Jarret Wilkins was voted this week’s State News Athlete of the Week.

The senior started the week with three hits against Dover before hitting a three-run homer with a double against Sussex Academy.
Wilkins is the Golden Knights’ starting catcher, leading a staff that has gave up 17 runs in 31 innings in Central’s 6-0 start to the season. He’s now 8-for-16 with eight RBI in seven games.

Wilkins plans to continue his playing career at Delaware Tech.

“Jarret is off to a great start for his senior season,” said Central coach D.J. Long. “He has also done a great job behind the plate this year.”

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

This process is performed exclusively online. When nominating an athlete, please include name, school and sport as well as a photo and brief description of why he or she deserves that week’s honor.

All nominations must be high school varsity athletes and come from high schools within Kent or Sussex counties. The winner appears in print and online each Friday.
