Adams, Hutchinson join forces in Maryland District 37B race

Posted

State Delegate Chris Adams and election newcomer Tom Hutchinson have united their campaign teams for the District 37B Republican primary election scheduled next month.

Adams, a Salisbury business owner, is seeking a third term, having first been elected in 2014.

Hutchinson, who lives in Woolford, is a small business owner known for his redevelopment work with Cambridge Main Street.

District 37B is a sprawling district that includes parts of Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot and Wicomico counties.

“I have known Tom throughout my tenure in the House of Delegates,” said Adams. “He is a strong community leader, a hard-working small business owner, and very respected throughout the community.

“I have found very few business owners like myself and Tom serving in Annapolis,” Adams said. “Legislators with a business background provide an essential service to voters by delivering a unique perspective to policy making. I believe we will work well together as we both understand conservative budgeting and the negative effect overburdensome regulations have on key industries operating on the Shore.”

Hutchinson said he is joining forces with Adams out of respect for the delegate’s reputation.

“The decision to join Team 37B was not taken lightly by me or my team,” Hutchinson said. “It was important to me to first campaign on my own accord to ensure that the voters are accepting me based upon my own beliefs and values.

“After weeks of campaigning, my message is strong and well received,” he said. “Along the campaign trail, I have met many supporters of Chris who see him as an effective legislator, great service provider, and who want to see him re-elected to office. Forming Team 37B makes perfect sense.”

The crowded GOP primary field has four contenders for two general election slots. In addition to Adams and Hutchinson, the candidates are Wicomico County Councilwoman Nicole Acle of Salisbury, the Rev. Ron James of Galestown.

State election law dictates that one delegate can be elected per county. Adams and Acle live in Wicomico; Hutchinson and James live in Dorchester. The residency restriction means only one candidate from Wicomico and one from Dorchester will move forward to the General Election.

The other District 37B incumbent, Delegate Johnny Mautz of St. Michaels, is running for state Senate.

The only Democrat in the race is Susan E. Delean-Botki of Oxford, a registered nurse who works for the University of Maryland Medical. She advances automatically to the Nov. 8 general election.

The Republican Primary is set for Tuesday, July 19, with early voting beginning Thursday, July 7.
