Active shooter drill planned for UMES

Posted

PRINCESS ANNE — Representatives from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center will lead an active shooter drill at UMES beginning 8 a.m. Monday, July 11. Participants will meet at the Engineering and Aviation Sciences building.

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, a part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, provides law enforcement training for 91 federal agencies, several state, local, and tribal agencies, and oversees or assists with training at several international law enforcement academies.

The timing for this drill in light of recent mass shootings is especially valuable, and UMES Police Chief Carlos Kelly said area police agencies and the Sheriff’s Office will be taking part.

Chief Kelly himself is relatively new to the Princess Anne campus, having been hired some four months ago from Grambling State University in Louisiana. The Philadelphia native and father of three was previously a lieutenant commander for the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, and he also worked for the Philadelphia Housing Authority’s police department.

Chief Kelly succeeded Crisfield native Mark Tyler who remains on the force having served as acting chief since departure of Ernest Leatherbury Jr. in 2016.
