81 percent of state’s COVID hospitalizations not fully vaccinated

DOVER — Of Delaware’s COVID-19 hospitalizations for the week of Sept. 20-26, 81% were not fully vaccinated, according to the Delaware Division of Public Health.

In that time frame, the most recent available dataset, there were 131 new hospitalizations and10698 were not fully vaccinated. For new cases during the same week, 2,490 of 3,158 (79%) were not fully vaccinated.

Delaware has recorded a total of 3,768 breakthrough cases — a positive test for COVID-19 after an individual has been fully vaccinated for two weeks or more. This total represents 0.71% of Delawareans who have been fully vaccinated.

There have been 1,954 COVID-19-related deaths in Delaware as of Thursday. Thirteen of those occurred during Sept. 20-26 and 10 of the 13 (71%) were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, DPH said.

DPH also reported 116 additional confirmed cases of the delta variant in Delaware through routine surveillance of test specimens at its lab and one outside lab last week. There have been 1,154 confirmed cases of delta in Delaware, but since every positive test is not sampled for variants the actual number is likely higher.

Delta is the only variant currently being monitored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a “variant of concern” and no other variants are currently classified as “variants of interest,” as the CDC recently updated the classifications of known COVID-19 variants.

DPH’s lab has sequenced 5,007 specimens for COVID-19 variant strains to date.

DPH also encouraged Delawareans to utilize community testing sites for non-emergency COVID-19 testing, instead of seeking tests at hospitals. A full list of testing sites is available at de.gov/gettested.

“Hospitals and Emergency Departments across the state are experiencing severe strain on their systems due to new COVID-19 cases,” said a DPH statement. “Unfortunately, visits by parents or guardians of children with a fever who are seeking a COVID-19 test and assessment, are contributing to that strain. Parents and guardians are encouraged to use COVID-19 testing sites and not hospital emergency departments for non-emergency situations.”
