74% of new Del. COVID hospitalizations not fully vaccinated

DOVER — Seventy-four percent of Delaware’s new COVID-19 hospitalizations over a seven-day period were not fully vaccinated, according to recent data from the Delaware Division of Public Health.

Of the 96 hospitalizations for the week of Oct. 4-10, 71 were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. For the same time period, 2300 of 2975 (77%) of new positive cases were also not fully vaccinated, according to DPH statistics.

There have been 4,683 total breakthrough cases reported to DPH to date — 0.9% of fully vaccinated Delawareans. A breakthrough case is defined as “testing positive for COVID-19 after an individual has been fully vaccinated for two weeks or more, although it does not mean that the infection occurred after vaccination.”

Eighty-five of the breakthrough cases resulted in hospitalization while 59 ended in death.

DPH also announced it identified 253 additional cases of the delta variant through routine surveillance of test specimens at its lab last week.

Delaware has recorded 139,874 total cases of COVID-19 throughout the pandemic with 2,032 COVID-19-related deaths. In long-term care centers, there have been a total of 2,903 positive cases involving residents and 849 COVID-19-related deaths.
DPH reported 199 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Friday at 6 p.m. — only the third time since Aug. 25 hospitalizations have been below the 200-mark.
