PRINCESS ANNE — A memorial scholarship in honor of Ronald J. Redding marks its third year and organizers are accepting applications to award $1,000 to a deserving high school senior planning to attend college or a trade school in order to pursue their career goal.

Applications are available in both public high school guidance offices, Somerset County Technical High School, by emailing rreddingmemorial586@gmail.com or send a message to Ronald Redding Memorial Scholarship Fund on Facebook. Applications are due May 12 and must include a letter of recommendation as well as an essay on the applicant’s career plans.

The scholarship winner will be notified by May 15. Funds can be used for tuition, books/equipment or other educational expenses. The 2022 recipient was McKenna Horner, a Washington High School graduate.

Mr. Redding was a member of the 1978 graduating class at WHS who after attending a year of college joined the U.S. Navy and served for 12½ years. Afterward he served one year with the Army National Guard. He worked in security for the private sector and had 25 years in Corrections as well.

He also worked in the Athletics Department at UMES for many years, and officiated basketball and umpired softball for youth through college age sports.

An active member of the Princess Anne Volunteer Fire Company he was among the top 10 and top five for fire and EMS calls. He passed away at age 61 on Sept. 24, 2020.
