Time served, restitution ordered for burglaries of off-campus housing during Thanksgiving break

PRINCESS ANNE — Two defendants who pleaded guilty to felony theft scheme for their involvement in burglarizing off campus UMES student apartments were sentenced to time served and ordered to repay more than $4,000 to the victims.

Juwan D. Johnson, 24, of Takoma Park, and Shae’Aun L. Miles, 20, of Princess Anne, joined Shawn A. Johnson, 21, of Frankford, Del., in the burglary of apartments in Arden’s Run which occurred when university students were away for the 2019 Thanksgiving break.

Princess Anne Police got the first call on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019 as one of the students arrived back to his unit to find it had been entered and items were missing. Calls from other students with similar stories followed, and the investigation ultimately led to the arrest of three suspects.

They were each charged with 53 felonies and misdemeanors.
On July 14, 2020 Juwan Johnson pleaded guilty to theft scheme between $1,500 and $25,000. On March 1 Circuit Court Judge Daniel W. Powell sentenced him to 18 months in jail with all but 145 days time served suspended. He will be on three years of supervised probation.

Appearing in court with $500 the UMES graduate turned it over to the state leaving seven victims yet to be satisfied with amounts ranging from over $1,000 to $50 for a total of $4,133 in restitution due.

Defense attorney Andrew Illuminati told the judge that his client has no prior record and Judge Powell said he would be willing to change the plea from guilty to probation before judgment if Johnson stays out of trouble and pays restitution.

Judge Powell said the faster it’s paid off the faster his record can be changed to PBJ because right now it will show a felony conviction. The judge added that Johnson had family support so the admonishment and disappointment of Johnson’s mother was probably worse than the 145 days he spent in jail, and Johnson agreed.

The judge tacked on $455 in court costs but said he wants that paid after the victims are satisfied.

As for Shae’Aun Miles, she pleaded guilty last June to the single felony charge of theft scheme. Standing by her attorney public defender Arch McFadden she was also sentenced to 18 months with all but 112 days of time served suspended.

Miles will likewise be on supervised probation for three years and must make restitution as well as it was ordered “jointly and severally” with Juwan Johnson. Court costs were $425 and Judge Powell offered to change her conviction to PBJ once all payments are made.

Shawn Johnson, the only legal tenant in the Arden’s Run apartment, pleaded guilty on Nov. 30 to misdemeanor theft between $100 and $1,500. In the plea agreement Judge Powell sentenced him to 213 days of time served with no fine or court costs. The prosecutor in each of these cases was Assistant State’s Attorney Erica Witz.
