WESTOVER — For the fourth time since 2007 a Cavins sibling will represent students as a non-voting member on the Somerset County Board of Education.

Cassidy Cavins, a junior at Washington High School, will join Crisfield High School’s representatives Tatiana Rubio and alternate Beverly Martinez, also juniors, to represent their schools and report on activities in the northern and southern ends of the county.

Cassidy follows in the footsteps of her brothers, Alex and Lawrence who each represented CHS and Richard who represented WHS. Alex and Richard went on to attend the U.S. Naval Academy and Lawrence went to West Point — while Cassidy plans to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University after graduation to become an aerospace engineer.

The daughter of Veronica and Chris Cavins, she is a member of the National Honor Society, plays field hockey and is in the symphonic and marching band. She is also a member of SADD. Cassidy recently earned her Gold Award through the Girl Scouts, the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve.

Tatiana is the daughter of Magedalena and Juan Rubio. This National Honor Society student has participated in soccer and basketball at school and helps with activities at her church.

After graduation she would like to attend Michigan State University and become an agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

If Tatiana is unable to be at one of the monthly board meetings Beverly Martinez will go in her place. She is the daughter of Aurelia and Saul Martinez and also a NHS member. She likes to read, listen to music, bake and is a member of a girls soccer club. She plans to earn her certified nursing assistant license and start at Salisbury University to eventually become a doctor.

The students were selected by their schools and introduced by Jill Holland, supervisor of social studies and instructional technology. Their first official meeting is Sept. 21.
