Gold Star Marker ceremony in Crisfield set for Veterans Day

CRISFIELD — This Veterans Day the Somerset County Garden Club will unveil a Gold Star Marker in front of the Crisfield Library to support and honor area families of fallen members of the United States military.

So the program can be as complete as possible, the SCGC is compiling the names of those families so they can be added to this tribute. If your family lost a loved one who was a resident of the Lower Eastern Shore at the time of his or her enlistment, contact Frances Follmer at 410-713-5405.

The Gold Star is taken from banners families would hang in their window at home so people could see that they had a loved one die in service to their country. Similar to this is the Blue Star banner representing someone is actively serving and a Blue Star Marker also sponsored by the SCGC is in Princess Anne in the state rest area across from Somerset County Tourism.

The markers are a project of the National Garden Clubs Inc., and both the Blue and Gold Star markers in Somerset County are supported by donations from the American Legion Stanley Cochrane Post 16 in Crisfield. According to SCGC Vice President Kathleen Garton, the Crisfield Gold Star Marker will be the second in the state.
