Girl Scouts to make Crisfield park pier safer

CRISFIELD — After observing a safety concern at the Collins Street pier two Girl Scout Cadettes want to work with the city and have life preservers replaced and secured.

Brae’Lyn Hankerson and Lily Funderburg of Troop 1258 are working on their Silver Award and are calling their project “Saving Lives at the Dock.”

The cadettes and their troop leader Annette Bagley attended the Mayor and City Council meeting this month and described what they found along the pier behind the Crisfield Library which is part of the Crisfield Municipal Park.

Brae’Lyn said they’re trying to find a way so the equipment will stay securely in place, while Lily said the frames where the rings were located were falling apart and this project will improve safety for visitors.

“It’s dangerous to have life preservers missing,” Lily said.

There is one life preserver that was still in its frame but two others are missing. During a recent low tide it appeared one of the life rings was in the marsh grass but too far away to be easily retrieved.

Mayor Darlene Taylor said missing equipment like this is a liability for the city and she wants to work with the girls on their project. Councilwoman Charlotte Scott appreciated them bringing it to their attention, and commended them for having the courage to come forward at their public meeting.

The Silver Award is one of the highest awards in Girl Scouting and is focused on identifying and coming forth with a solution to make a difference in the community.

Mrs. Bagley has been leading the Westover troop for 11 years.
