Division Street bridge in Downtown Salisbury closed until Jan. 10

An important artery into Downtown Salisbury is closed to traffic through Jan. 10 in order to make necessary repairs.

The South Division Street bridge closed last week for painting and repairs, although it will reopen briefly this Sunday for the annual Christmas Parade, said Rick Baldwin, the city’s Director of Infrastructure and Development.

The most challenging part of the project will be replacing the rubber compression joints, with that work starting sometime next week, he said. Once the joints are completed, the bridge will be open to one-way traffic in mid- to late-December.

The contractor also will repair the bridge deck, repair spalling concrete and repaint the bridge parapets, Baldwin said. Some of the work will be done from boats underneath the bridge.

The work will improve safety and extend the life of the bridge which is now 60 years old.

“I’d like to believe that like myself, it looks pretty good for its age,” Baldwin said.

The city sought bids for the work and awarded a contract to Murtech Marine for $82,788. Murtech also recently completed the pedestrian bridge on Camden Street.

The South Division Street bridge over the Wicomico River near the Wicomico Public Library links the Downtown area with Carroll Street and the south end of town. For the time being, drivers can use the Circle Avenue bridge to get to and from Downtown.

While no traffic will be permitted across the bridge during this period, all surrounding streets will remain open, city officials said.
