Dialing procedures change to allow suicide hotline

Beginning July 16, 2022, Americans will be able to simply dial 988 and be put through to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

But for 988 to work in Delaware’s 302 area code, every customer with seven-digit local dialing must be transitioned to 10-digit dialing.

According to a press release from the Delaware Public Service Commission, the Federal Communications Commission is now mandating this shift.

Beginning this April 24, consumers in the 302 area code should begin dialing 10 digits, both the area code and the telephone number, for local calls. This date marks the beginning of the “permissive dialing period,” meaning local callers who only put in seven digits will still be put through.

That will last until Oct. 24, after which local calls made with only seven digits may not be completed.

This change will not only impact phones. Some medical-alert devices, digital security systems and other pieces of technology will also need to be reprogrammed.

“Any needed reprogramming of alarm and home security equipment must be done during the permissive dialing period from April 24, 2021 to October 24, 2021 to avoid interruption of services,” the press release said.
