Delmar man arrested on drugs and weapon charges

SEAFORD — A Delmar, Maryland man was arrested by Delaware State Police on drug and weapon charges following a traffic stop in Seaford on Friday night.

Troy Smith was pulled over at approximately 7:51 p.m. on Concord Pond Road for driving without proper lighting above the registration plate, state police said.

During the traffic stop, a state trooper observed suspected drugs in plain sight and took Mr. Smith into custody without incident, according to authorities. Subsequently, a probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted, and the trooper discovered a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun, approximately .007 grams of heroin, 4 Hydrocodone pills and multiple drug paraphernalia.

A computer inquiry revealed Mr. Smith is a person prohibited from possessing a weapon and has a suspended license.

He was transported to Troop 5 where he was charged with felony possession of a firearm by person prohibited, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license and failure to have a registration plate light.

Mr. Smith was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court No. 3 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $10,950 cash bond.
